Daviess County Fiscal Court Meeting June 1, 2023
Summary
The Fiscal Court met on June 1, 2023, and approved the full slate of routine business, including minutes, claims, budget transfers, contracts and annual bids. All of these votes were by voice and the transcript does not record any opposition.
The main action was the second reading of the fiscal year 2023-24 county budget, about $107.4 million across all funds. It assumes a 6.5 percent cost-of-living adjustment, with no new taxes and no new debt. Treasurer Jordan Johnson said the state approved the budget as to form and classification on May 10. It takes effect July 1.
The court approved annual contracts for janitorial services, road materials, culvert pipe and concrete. It also approved a design contract for renovating the clerk's election area, a waste tire grant, and a school bus contract for nonpublic students. Several landfill and transfer station hires were approved, and Jordan Johnson was reappointed county treasurer. Bill Weichel was appointed to the RWRA board.
During public comment, several residents criticized the budget for not funding the River Park Center, which previously received $12,500 from the county. Residents tied this to objections over drag shows there. One speaker supported the decision on religious grounds. The judge said the budget vote was not a vote on any single social issue.
The court then voted to enter closed session to discuss personnel and possible real property acquisition. Final action was expected after the closed session. Upcoming meetings are June 8 (reapportionment committee), June 22 and June 30.
