Daviess County Fiscal Court Meeting February 22, 2024
Summary
The Daviess County Fiscal Court met on February 22, 2024. It opened with a prayer and the pledge, and welcomed new staff accountant Candace Sturgeon. The treasurer's report for January was presented, and Judge Executive Castlen read an executive order placing a wet/dry special election for the G103 Yelvington precinct on the May 21, 2024 primary ballot.
The court approved the minutes, claims, and a long consent-style list of items. These included the annual search and rescue affiliation, a jail video arraignment equipment grant agreement, military helicopter support for the April 20 Touch-a-Truck event at Panther Creek Park, and two Kentucky Pride Fund grant applications (a compost wheel loader and household hazardous waste day). The court also approved a FEMA hazard mitigation contract modification and a state waste tire grant for a tire amnesty day, which costs the county no money.
Spending approvals covered $112,000 for a Knottsville Playground Association handicap ramp and walkway, two fifth wheel road tractors for the transfer station, Horse Fork Creek Park handrails, sign posts for the road department, disc golf signage, a new payroll and HR system (PayLocity), and detention center food services with a rising per-meal rate. The court also hired a firefighter and made several board appointments (ethics board and property maintenance code board of appeals).
During public comment, speakers announced Republican and community events. A coalition representative criticized the court over the stalled public library board appointments and the library book dispute. Others spoke on Teen Week events, record-keeping, and support for law enforcement. Commissioners discussed roadside trash, early voting, and property maintenance enforcement. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 5 at 5:00 pm, and Yellow Creek Park has extended hours starting March 1.
