Daviess County Fiscal Court
Meeting of May 9, 2024
Daviess County Fiscal Court Meeting May 9, 2024
Summary
The Daviess County Fiscal Court opened with a required public hearing on use of Local Government Economic Assistance and County Road Aid funds. No one spoke, so the budget will keep assuming those funds go to county roads and bridges. The county expects about $131,000 in LGEA funds and about $1.68 million in county road aid for fiscal year 2024-25.
The court recognized a third grader from Deer Park Elementary whose class made anti-litter artwork, which will be displayed in the courthouse. It also proclaimed May 2024 High School Hero Month with the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center, which presented a $1,000 scholarship. A third proclamation named May 11 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day.
The court approved, with every vote carried by voice, the previous meeting's minutes, claims, the annual standing order for recurring expenses, a courts facilities reimbursement agreement, an extension of the Conexon fiber broadband project to November 30, 2024, a movie screen rental for a Halloween event, and agreements with KCTCS for training equipment and agricultural land. It also approved a waste tire grant, a Sheriff's Office drug task force resolution, the county road aid agreement, three bids and quotes (limestone, clay targets, sewer pipe), an amended county clerk claim, and a joint appointment to the drug and alcohol addiction steering committee.
The first reading of the fiscal year 2024-25 budget was held, totaling about $34.9 million across all funds, with no new taxes or new debt. No vote was needed, and the second reading and adoption are set for June 6, 2024. Commissioners voiced support for the animal shelter, and a resident asked the court to reconsider limiting the low-cost spay/neuter clinic to low-income residents. The judge said a solution is being worked on.
Commissioners closed with remarks on National Police Week, a memorial service on May 16, detention center award winners, storm response, and the upcoming Barbecue and Barrels event.
