Summary

Hardin County Fiscal Court – August 23, 2022

The Fiscal Court held two public hearings before moving to routine business. The first addressed the 2022 county property tax rates, with representatives from the Health Department, Extension District, and Conservation District explaining their proposed rates (mostly holding steady at compensating rates). The second hearing concerned a request from property owner Robert Moore to close an undeveloped 40-foot right-of-way (Cherry Hill Drive) in Cherry Hill Estates so he could merge it with his existing lots; no objections were raised and the closure was recommended for approval.

Elected officials gave their regular reports: the Coroner reported rising overdose deaths and cremation numbers; the Sheriff's Office reported arrests, citations, and highlighted a mission delivering water and gift cards to flood-ravaged Eastern Kentucky along with donating a surplus cruiser; the Sheriff's CFO reviewed budget spending, noting new vehicle purchases; and the County Clerk reported fee collections up year-over-year.

The court's main financial action was adopting the 2022 county property tax rates at the compensating rate, lowering the real property rate from 120 cents to 116 cents per $100 of valuation. Officials explained this means most taxpayers will pay roughly the same as last year, and emphasized that county government only receives about 12.6 cents of every tax dollar, with the majority going to schools and other entities. This marks the sixth rate reduction in 20 years.

The court also approved its consent agenda and the Cherry Hill Drive road closing resolution. Magistrates closed with updates including praise for the county's low tax rates and mention of nearby road paving projects. The meeting adjourned with the next session scheduled for September 13.
