Summary

Ohio County Fiscal Court – October 24, 2023

The Fiscal Court approved routine business including the minutes from the October 10th meeting, bills and claims, and the sheriff's quarterly report and September receipts acknowledgement. The court also approved purchasing 35 tables and 160 chairs (using a repurposed emergency management trailer) to support first responder appreciation events and other county uses such as the park and museum.

The airport board chairman, John Gates, gave an extensive update on airport progress, including a new jet-A fuel tank, a 10-unit T-hangar expansion project fully funded by the state, cost-saving measures on phone bills and runway lighting, and plans for a ramp expansion to add parking and tie-down space. He invited the court to visit and tour the facility.

The court approved an interlocal agreement with Daviess County to finish paving roughly 690-700 feet of Mosley Road at the county line, splitting costs, which still requires state approval. The court also approved a spay/neuter grant contract for the animal shelter, matching funds to help reduce adoption fees, and approved hiring Robert Stone for a full-time senior center position funded through ARPA funds (with discussion that this funding source ends at the end of next year, requiring future budget re-evaluation).

Committee reports included updates on the wage scale and administrative code committees, a call for the waste committee to report soon given ongoing litter issues, and a broadband committee update. The broadband committee reported productive talks with Spectrum, which shared preliminary service maps and plans for expansion, and noted improved KenEnergy fiber service reaching residents in areas like the Narrows and Fordsville, with more details expected after the new year.

Magistrates had few additional comments; one noted attending a nice open house event for a local business. The meeting adjourned with upcoming committee and regular meetings scheduled for November 14th.
